Listening Styles

September 11, 2005 / by birthorder

Each of the Birth Orders listens for certain things. Only Children listen for things they can talk about in their experience. First Borns listen to agree or disagree. Second Borns listen for details. Third Borns listen for ideas. Fourth Borns tend to not listen.

Of course, at times everyone also listens to understand, to gain information, to relate and to learn. When you have a problem listening, check to see if you are listening according to your Birth Order personality instead of really listening. When another person does not seem to listen, that person's Birth Order may tell you what the person is really listening for. It's easier to deal with things when you know what is going on.

I took that test that you had given Barb. It puts me to being a third child in which is wrong. (1) I am adopted and my birth mother had me and I was her first. (2)My adopted parents adopted me and I was their second adopted child. So, what does this mean? I don't know, just more confused and lost. What would your input be on this?

Now, I am thinking I also listen to details as well as ideas when I was a child. Is it possible to fall in between these two categories? Why do I say this? By choice I had to be more observant due to not hearing well so my eyes had to hear for me. While I did pay attention to details for this reasons. I also find my self full of ideas due to be creative. It is like right handed people use their right brain more and left handed people use both because the more or less have too. I am right handed and use both sides of my brain. How do I know this? I took a test.

The point of the test is to determine your Birth Order personality that may be different for some reason than your actual place in the family. So, you can be Third Born though your place in the family is not third born. You may be paying attention to details without being obsessed with them which would be Second Born.

    Hi!

The test can be found in my book "The Birth Order Effect." In the book you will also find the Birth Order Matrix and two lists of characteristics for each Birth Order. That will be adequate to discover Birth Order.

Interesting. I'm a fourth born and I am actually a very good listener, so much so that I've moved up in the ranks quickly at my workplace in large part because of my listening skills. I can listen to what the customer is saying and figure out how to tailor technology to best suit them. And I've counseled some of our Help Desk people on how best to listen to people when trying to help them.
