The Pushy Third Born

September 25, 2005 / by birthorder

As a child the Third Born had to cope with Second Born teasing. There was no winning over this Second Born unless the Third Born got pushy. Then the Second Born would back off. So, with these childhood memories the adult Third Born tends to push people rather than to reason with them.

The Third Born salesperson just won't give up. The Third Born friend just won't take "no" for an answer. The Third Born partner insists on his or her way of doing things. As a result it is hard to work with Third Borns. They tend to do things alone or leave things for others to do. It is hard to work in cooperation with others if your main strategy is to push them rather than negotiate with them.

Dr. Phil of TV fame is a pushy type Third Born. It makes for good, dramatic TV. He confronts people with their problems, pushes them to make changes and does not stop till the person goes along. He is very good at it. He brings a lot of knowledge, experience and wisdom to his work but his main strategy, on TV at least, is to push people into making changes.

It can be helpful for the Third Born to realize that not everyone is a Second Born with whom you cannot reason. The Third Born needs to know that he or she is not a child surrounded by Second Borns but rather an adult among adults with whom he or she can reason. It makes for better relationships with everyone.

There are exceptions, of course. Some cautious type Third Borns are exactly the opposite. They would not pressure anyone at any time.

    I've been called Hitler.

Once I read on a web board someone commenting on how Dr. Phil likes to make people cry. And that comment struck me as insightful. Since a 2 is a bit robotic and avoids expressing emotion a 3 will want others (thinking they are all 2's) to compensate. A 3 gets off on others having extreme emotion because they don't feel they got enough of that as a kid.

Also, not sure if Oprah is a hyper intelligent 3, one the fence with that one, but do you notice how she loves to make people freak out (in a positive way). She pulls it out of her audience to scream or adore her or a situation she's created. This is getting emotion out of people who don't really (not all) need to have emotion brought out. I noticed this last week catching her show. Jennifer Anniston was on and she just had the whole audience in hysterics!

Incidentally, as Cliff notes 3's must be in the so called 'adult' position, or they have to be 'above' others in order to pull this off. You can't get emotion and be pushy like that out of peers or equals. And we all know 3's love relating to their equals in status, intelligence etc.

Oprah might be a bad example.
